Oprah Winfrey

“I relate to your story so much. I have done this drug. So I know exactly what you’re talking about. And that is my life’s great big secret that has always been held over my head.”

In a show about women recovering from crack cocaine addiction, Oprah Winfrey broke down and made the spontaneous decision to admit on television that she too had smoked crack in her early twenties.  The guest she was interviewing had commented that during her period of drug abuse, she was “addicted to the man, not the drugs”.  Oprah expressed that she could relate to this woman’s story because she too had used crack because she was involved with a man and she did drugs when she was with him.  “When he was gone the drugs were gone,”
she said.  This is a story many women struggling with alcohol and drug abuse can relate to.  And because Oprah is such a hero for so many people, opening up and being honest about it is a huge inspiration to others with similar experiences.

Jamie Lee Curtis

“The beautiful part of being able to acknowledge your own illness, to call yourself an alcoholic or a drug addict, is a badge of honor, because the shameful secret is the reason why it’s such a pervasive illness. It’s the secret shame that keeps people locked up in their disease.”

Jamie Lee Curtis is known as one of the best actresses in Hollywood and has grown to become a household name. However, her fans didn’t realize that nearly every day at 5 PM, she would give in to her addiction to Vicodin. Jamie Lee Curtis experienced a history of addiction in her family as well as trauma in her own life which triggered her addiction. However, once she was able to get the care that she needed for her addiction so her life and career could grow and develop.

Zac Efron

“It’s a never-ending struggle. I was drinking a lot, way too much. And it’s never one specific thing — I mean, you’re in your 20s, single, going through life in Hollywood, you know? Everything is thrown at you. I wouldn’t take anything back; I needed to learn everything I did. But it was an interesting journey, to say the least.”

Zac Efron made his name in the industry when he was pretty young with the hit movie series “High School Musical.” While Efron became a hot commodity in Hollywood, the sudden fame was something that he struggled with. Over time, he started turning to alcohol as a way just to interact with other people or make it through movie production. At a certain point, this excessive lifestyle caught up with him, and he realized that the only way that he would be able to continue to grow his career and save his life was to put the drink down and focus on what he needed to do to gain back control over his life.
