What is Ecstasy?

Your first question is probably what, exactly, is ecstasy? And is it really that big of a deal? Without getting too technical on the science stuff, ecstasy / MDMA / Molly is a synthetic drug that alters the user’s mood and perception. Synthetic means it’s made in a lab, not based on a plant or naturally occurring substance. It’s also a Schedule 1 narcotic, which means the U.S. government has deemed it has no medically redeeming value and has a high propensity to be addictive2. This means the possession and use of ecstasy is always illegal.

Ecstasy is usually taken orally in the form of a pill or tablet. It can also be inhaled through the nose (snorted) as a powder1.

One of the things that can make ecstasy so dangerous is the unknown. In other words, is the product a person thinks they are buying actually what they are getting? Many times, ecstasy includes other drugs in addition to or instead of what’s being sold. Known additives may include:

  • Cocaine
  • Methamphetamine
  • Ketamine
  • Synthetic Cathonines (aka bath salts), and more.

In not fully knowing exactly what they are getting, a person could:

  • take a drug they do not mean to take,
  • have a reaction to an unknown product, or
  • mix an unknown substance with another drug such as marijuana or alcohol.

Is Ecstasy Addictive?

The question of the addictive nature of MDMA is still being researched. Keep in mind, however, that addiction can have two components: physical and psychological. While the nature of ecstasy being physiologically addictive is still highly debated, it can still be psychologically addictive — meaning you could have a strong or overwhelming desire to keep using the drug despite its harmful consequences. Additionally, ecstasy is often used together with other addictive substances, such as alcohol.

Ecstasy & MDMA: Why Do People Use it and How Does it Feel?

Ecstasy / MDMA / Molly is most typically used by teens and young adults in environments such as nightclubs or rave parties. However, its use has spread more broadly beyond this niche. Ecstasy acts as both a stimulant and a hallucinogenic. It works on three brain messenger chemicals, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine2.

It produces feelings of:

  • Euphoria
  • Increased energy
  • Pleasure
  • Lowered inhibitions
  • Emotional warmth
  • Sexual arousal
  • Distortion of time
  • Sensory distortion

Unfortunately, it can have undesired effects on the brain and body as well. Some of these are merely uncomfortable and some can be dangerous to the point of life-threatening. Ecstasy use can cause:

  • Increase in heart rate and blood pressure
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness and fainting
  • Chills
  • Sweats
  • Higher body temperature (This could contribute to liver, kidney, or heart damage and potentially be life-threatening.)
  • Dehydration
  • Involuntary teeth clenching
