What Is Inpatient Drug Rehab?
Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are one of several levels of addiction treatment that many rehab facilities utilize for treating addiction and mental health disorders, as well as other disorders that don’t require medical detox or 24-hour supervision. For instance, our New Jersey IOP program is a step down from other, more intensive programs like PHP and residential treatment, where clients can learn how to transition from an addiction-centered life to a sober one. Keep reading to learn more about our IOP treatment for addiction and how it could help you or a loved one achieve long-term sobriety.
What Is an IOP?
IOP stands for “intensive outpatient program,” which is used at Legacy Healing Center locations to address substance abuse disorders. Clients at our IOP rehab can expect to participate in services like group therapy sessions, individual therapy sessions, life skills classes, and 12-step support groups where they can receive education about their disorders, their causes, and the best coping techniques for managing their recovery outside of rehab.
Group therapy is one of the main modalities used in our intensive outpatient program for addiction treatment. Groups allow IOP participants to improve communication skills, learn how to socialize and have fun without substance abuse, support others in the recovery community, and develop the necessary structure and discipline. Other services offered in our New Jersey IOP treatment include medication management, case management, psychiatric screening, and vocational training, all of which are designed to help clients rebuild their lives after recovery.
The goals of IOP addiction treatment include:
- Achieving behavioral changes
- Addressing psychosocial issues such as housing, employment, and meeting probation requirements
- Developing a support system at home
- Developing hobbies that support a sober lifestyle
- Developing independence and accountability for one’s actions
- Improving problem-solving skills
- Maintaining abstinence from drugs and alcohol
- & More
Furthermore, a major benefit of our intensive outpatient program for substance abuse is flexibility. Legacy Healing centers are all over the nation, and we know how everyone’s experience transitioning from a life of addiction to a life of sobriety can be difficult. Therefore, to make the transition smoother, we utilize the continuum of care method and allow clients to naturally progress through our levels of addiction treatment – such as our IOP – to help them succeed.

Our IOP in New Jersey
IOP treatment for substance abuse generally consists of 9 hours or more of therapy for 3 to 5 days per week. However, the duration of this program may vary according to the facility, the individual’s needs, and the person’s schedule outside of rehab. IOP is meant to be a flexible level of care that allows clients to spend time with loved ones, work, and/or go to school, so we always make sure to create a treatment schedule that works for them.
Clients at our facility can also expect our IOP rehab to range from 6 to 30 hours per week and, in general, last about 90 days. Remember, this program usually follows more intensive levels of care, such as residential treatment and partial hospitalization treatment, or it may be used as a transitional step for individuals who are medically stable and don’t require inpatient care.
While 90 days is the general standard length of time for IOP, the duration of the program can be adjusted according to the individual’s needs, whether they have a strong support system at home, and the state of their mental health. For instance, a patient who builds skills and remains sober may need fewer sessions as they progress in their recovery, while someone who has relapsed once or several times may require more sessions or to return to a different level of care.
