Pompano Treatment for Benzo Addiction

What Drug Class are Benzodiazepines?

Benzodiazepines, or benzos, are a class of depressant drugs that are commonly utilized for their sedating effects. They are typically applied to cases of anxiety and insomnia but have also proven useful in managing muscle spasms and minimizing seizures. Unfortunately, abuse of this drug can lead to the development of a tolerance, which in turn can result in a serious addiction that can affect a person for the rest of their life. This is why Legacy Healing Center Pompano offers treatment for benzo addiction that can help these individuals turn their lives around for the better.

How Do Benzos Work?

Benzodiazepines are useful in slowing down messages that travel between the brain and the rest of the body. They do this by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that is responsible for minimizing the intensity of stimulating signals within the central nervous system. In other words, these drugs are likely to make the user feel sensations of deep relaxation, which explains their classification as a “downer” drug.

Unfortunately, the benefits of this substance are commonly overshadowed by its potential for abuse and addiction. Because benzos impact a particular neurotransmitter in the brain – and thus chemical balance and structure in the brain – they are considered to be habit-forming or addictive drugs.

It’s crucial for individuals who are taking prescription benzodiazepines to use them as directed by their doctors. When a person chooses to stray from a doctor’s directions, it can result in a tolerance being formed. Once this occurs, the user will need more of the drug each time to produce the same desired effects.

The longer and more heavily a person uses benzos, the more accustomed to the drug’s effects that the body and mind become. Eventually, physical dependence may also develop. Physical dependence is marked by the occurrence of withdrawal from benzos when the drug is absent from the body or when doses are suddenly cut down. Benzo withdrawals are often uncomfortable and painful enough that users will continue using drugs simply to avoid them.

Benzodiazepine Addiction Symptoms

Consistent benzo abuse can result in a serious dependency that becomes harder to manage the longer it persists. Alongside withdrawal symptoms, a person who’s addicted to benzos may also exhibit some physical and behavioral changes. Common warning signs of benzo abuse include:

  • – Disinterest in hobbies
  • – Doctor shopping to obtain multiple prescriptions
  • – Visible confusion or disorientation
  • – Reduced inhibitions
  • – Drastic changes to one’s mood
  • – Intense anger, especially when denied the drug
  • – Severe weight loss
  • – Noticeable drowsiness
  • – Slurred speech
  • – Difficulty staying awake
  • – Withdrawal from loved ones
  • – Fluctuations in appetite and weight
  • – Empty pill bottles in their room or home
  • – Stealing from others to buy drugs
  • – Asking to borrow others’ medications
  • – Lying about ailments and symptoms to get more prescriptions

If you notice any of these signs in a loved one, it might be time for benzo addiction treatment, starting with a medically monitored detox
