History of Opioid Addiction

The opioid epidemic can be seen as occurring in three major waves starting in the 1990s. In the 1990s, the use of medical opioids increased as they were advertised and sold as effective pain medications with little to no downsides. It soon became clear that opioid pain relievers were addictive and the risk of abuse was high. The sudden increase in prescription opioid pain relievers led to a substantial increase in overdose rates.

In 2010, the second opioid epidemic wave began. It was caused by a significant increase in heroin overdose. It is believed that with stricter control of opioid prescriptions, people turned to heroin as the drug flooded the streets and become exceedingly cheap.

The third wave of the opioid epidemic was caused by fentanyl entering the market. Fentanyl is a cheap opioid that is extremely powerful. It became a way for unscrupulous drug dealers to boost the potency of their drugs cheaply. Since fentanyl is as much as 50 times more powerful than heroin, the largest increase in opioid-related overdose deaths ensued.

How to Detox from Opioids

One of the things that makes stopping opioid use in an addiction difficult are the withdrawal symptoms common with opioid dependence. The symptoms can also be serious, requiring medical attention, if prior medical conditions are present.

Symptoms common with opioid withdrawal include mental symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and agitation. The majority of symptoms are physical and include symptoms such as yawning, sweating, muscle aches, a runny nose, diarrhea, and abdominal cramping. You may also experience nausea and vomiting, insomnia, and increased tearing.

While these symptoms may lead to relapse when you attempt to detox alone, in our opioid rehab for St. Petersburg residents, you can receive medical assistance through our medically-assisted detox program. This program helps you in three ways: medications reduce symptoms, medical supervision ensures a safe recovery, and staying in our facility during your detox prevents relapse since exposure to drugs is removed.

Some of the medications that you can expect to be given during detox include clonidine, buprenorphine, and methadone depending on your needs. Over-the-counter medications may also used to treat symptoms such as diarrhea.

What Opioid Rehab is Like

Our opioid rehab provides you with a medical detox program, but also all of the therapies and holistic treatments that can help you to overcome addiction.

The behavioral therapies that will be a part of your personalized treatment plan includes treatment models such as process therapy, solution focused therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, family systems, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motivation enhancement therapy.

These therapies will help to address the underlying issues that may be causing you to abuse opioids. They also serve to improve your overall quality of life, relationships, and motivation.

Along with behavioral therapy, we will treat you through a holistic approach. Through this approach, we explore areas of your life such as your family dynamics, your work, and co-occurring mental disorders. Through holistic healing programs, your long-term sobriety can be improved.
