About Benzodiazepines
Benzodiazepines, or benzos, are prescription drugs that are commonly used to treat panic disorders, insomnia, and anxiety. They were first discovered in the 1950s and have developed a reputation for abuse, addiction, and other negative applications. To combat these occurrences, treatment facilities around the country have developed specified programs that address the unique facets of this addiction. Legacy Healing’s benzo rehab center in New Jersey offers services to aid our patients in overcoming their dependency and living the lives they deserve.

What Do Benzos Do?
Benzos work by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that is responsible for blocking excitable signals in the central nervous system. In other words, benzodiazepines slow down functions in the brain, resulting in feelings of relaxation and tiredness. This is why these depressants are referred to as “downers.” Some people rely on short-acting versions to feel the effects more quickly, although these can lead to more severe side effects. Some long-acting benzos may reduce these occurrences, but there is still a possibility of overdose and abuse.
Symptoms of Benzodiazepine Abuse
While these drugs are useful, chronic or long-term benzo use can result in the development of a tolerance to the substance. Long-term use is typically defined as occurring for 3 to 6 months and can be indicated by a number of signs and side effects, including:
- – Altered eating habits
- – Chronic constipation
- – Feelings of confusion or depression
- – Erratic behavior
- – Impaired cognitive abilities
- – Slowed reflexes
There are also certain tell-tale signs that a person has developed a benzo addiction, such as:
- – Dishonesty regarding drug use
- – Visiting different doctors to get multiple prescriptions (doctor shopping)
- – Lack of interest in things once enjoyed
- – Social isolation
- – Taking medicine in any way other than directed
