Benzodiazepines are useful in slowing down messages that travel between the brain and the rest of the body. They do this by enhancing the effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that is responsible for minimizing the intensity of stimulating signals within the central nervous system.
