Understanding Signs of Prescription Drug Addiction
Do you wake up in the morning and the first thing that you think about is when you can consume your prescription drug of choice? Have you noticed that your personal and professional relationships have suffered as a result of your prescription drug use? If the answer is yes, then these are clear signs that you may be suffering from an addiction to prescription drugs.
There are both physical and emotional signs that indicate a possible addiction. For example, if you do not consume the specific drug within a certain amount of time, you may begin to shake or feel nauseous. This is indicative of your body beginning to experience withdrawal. Keep in mind that if you are still in active addiction, we offer a detox program that can help you remove the influence of prescription medication
Why Prescription Drug Addiction is On the Rise
Sadly, the reality behind prescription addiction is that the addiction may start off very innocently. Prescription medication is often given by doctors that are treating patients that are injured or struggling with a specific condition such as anxiety or sleep problems. Regardless of the situation, it’s important to remember that prescription medication is rarely used long-term. However, if you are prescribed something to use for an extended period of time such as Adderall, it should be prescribed and consumed by a doctor who will pay close attention to the dosage and frequency of use.
Many times, patients do not even realize that they have become addicted to the medication. He or she becomes so used to the feeling that they get after consuming it that it becomes second nature. For example, Xanax is a medication that is often used to help a person who has an anxiety disorder but can also be used to assist a person who is struggling to overcome an addiction to alcohol. If Xanax consumption is not closely monitored, a person may find that they were able to overcome one addiction (alcohol) but developed another one (prescription drugs).
The Most Abused Prescription Medications
An example of a prescription medication that is widely abused is benzodiazepines. Xanax, clonazepam, and valium are all examples of benzodiazepines. These medications are typically used to treat anxiety disorders as well as panic attacks.
You may be surprised to learn that various sleeping medications are a leading example of prescriptions that are abused throughout the United States. Lunesta, Ambien, and Sonata are all prescribed to help patients that have sleep disorders. The medication is meant to be used for a short period of time to help a patient establish their own natural sleep schedule. Similar to benzodiazepines, these sleep medicines are not meant to be used long-term.
OxyContin is an example of a prescription drug that is prescribed when you are trying to eliminate pain while you are healing from an injury. For example, if you have a wisdom tooth pulled, your dentist may prescribe oxycontin for a few days to help you manage the pain while your body recovers. Oxycontin helps your body to relax, however, if you take too many OxyContin during a given time span, your body may relax too much and you could stop breathing.
Dangers of Prescription Drug Addiction
It’s critical that you never overlook the possibly lethal consequences of prescription drug addiction. Unfortunately, it is extremely easy to overdose on prescription medications. While in some cases an overdose could lead to death, an overdose can also result in serious physical consequences including seizures or irreparable brain damage.
