History of Opioid Addiction

Many people are surprised to learn that opioids have been in existence in different forms for thousands of years. In fact, smoking opioids were used in the 1700s in the same way cigarettes are today. In the United States, opioids were used medicinally, primarily beginning during the Civil War. Sadly, this resulted in many Civil War veterans returning home with an addiction they didn’t understand.

Until recently, the addictive qualities of opioids were not fully understood, resulting in an explosion of addiction cases associated with opioids.

How to Detox From Opioids

It’s important not to overlook the critical role that detox plays in your overall recovery. You won’t be able to completely commit to a treatment plan unless you begin it without the influence of your drug of choice. The issue is that when your brain and body realize that it will no longer consume that drug, you will begin to experience the physical and psychological effects associated with withdrawal. Although these symptoms can vary from client-to-client, there is always the possibility that they could turn severe if not deadly, which is why it’s never recommended that you try to detox on your own.

What Opioid Rehab Is Like

Your time at Legacy Healing Center in South Florida will consist of a combination of taking part in different therapeutic activities and events that will help reinforce your newfound sobriety. Examples of therapies that we offer at Legacy Healing include group therapy, individual therapy, and family and behavioral therapy. When you are not participating in these forms of treatment, you will have the flexibility to enjoy one of the numerous amenities our facility offers, including working out in our gym, watching TV, or picking up a book from our library.

How Long Does Rehab Last?

The decision regarding how long your treatment plan will last is something that we recommend you make with the help of a member of our team. Treatment programs typically last anywhere between 30 and 90 days. However, you have the flexibility to adjust your recovery plan at any time. When you first reach out to Legacy Healing, one of our intake specialists can speak with you more about your options for the length of your stay.
