Understanding Signs of Rx Addiction

It’s not uncommon for there to be noticeable physical and emotional signs of an addiction to prescription medication. Although the symptoms associated with prescription addiction can range, common signs of addiction include a change in personality and the development of shakes or sweating if a person goes for too long without consuming their drug of choice.

Legacy Healing Center does offer a detox program to help clients that are combating active addiction. We strongly encourage our clients to go through our detox program before they begin a recovery program to ensure that you start your recovery with a clear mind to get the most out of your time at our facility.

Why Rx Addiction Is on the Rise

The reasoning behind the rise in prescription medication addiction varies. In many cases, the addiction begins innocently after a person is prescribed medication due to an injury or due to a mental health issue such as depression. However, if their intake is not closely monitored, their consumption could quickly spiral out of control. When the addiction takes hold, if a person is no longer able to obtain their drug of choice through their doctor, they may turn to illegal methods.

The Most Abused Rx Medications

The most abused prescription medications usually fall into three main categories: opioids, depressants, and stimulants. Opioids are traditionally prescribed by doctors to reduce pain, while depressants are generally used for patients who are struggling with depression and anxiety. Stimulants, on the other hand, have been prescribed to patients that struggle with ADD or ADHD. However, these drugs should not be used for an extended period.

Dangers of Rx Addiction

There are multiple dangers associated with an addiction to prescription medication. Sadly, it can be easy to lose track of the amount of prescription medication you consume, ultimately leading to an accidental overdose and possibly death.

Other than the physical consequences of prescription addiction, you also run the risk of alienating yourself from your friends and family. These essential people in your life will likely pick up on the change in your behavior when you are under the influence and may want to distance themselves from it. This can put you in a position where you feel incredibly alone, which does not help drive you toward recovery.
