Opioid Rehab for Manhattan Residents

Opioid Epidemic

The opioid epidemic took off in the United States in the late 1990s. The epidemic developed due to pharmaceutical companies providing assurances to the medical community that prescription painkillers that contained opioids did not have any addictive qualities. The result of this misinformation was the death of thousands of people and an epidemic that still has lingering effects on our country today.

History of Opioid Addiction

You may be surprised to learn that opioids have been readily available in the United States since the 1700s. In fact, it was once perfectly legal to use opioids in a recreational sense. Over time, it became clear that opioids had addictive features, resulting in the United States government cracking down on the recreational use of the drugs and causing doctors to second guess prescribing the medication. Today, opioids are still prescribed to patients. However, it is done so under strict standards.

How to Detox From Opioids

You should never try to undergo the process of detoxing from opioids unless you are under the care of a trained professional. Typically, within the first few hours of the last time you consumed your opioid of choice, you will begin to feel the physical and psychological effects associated with withdrawal. Although withdrawal symptoms can differ, you will feel nauseous, anxious, and shaky more often than not. Many clients compare detoxing from opioids as feeling as though they are combating the symptoms of a bad case of the flu.
