History of Opioid Addiction

The existence of opioids goes back several centuries. Originally, it was not known that opioids had any type of addictive qualities, so it was frequently used recreationally. However, the use of opioids crossed over into the medical field around the American Civil War when the opioids were used to relieve pain for soldiers injured on the battlefield. Unfortunately, countless soldiers were sent home with an addiction as a result.

In the 1990s, the pharmaceutical industry insisted that the possibility of developing an addiction to opioids was minimal. However, the results of this proclamation were catastrophic and resulted in the addiction of millions of Americans, which continues to this day. Although different forms of opioids are still prescribed today, patients are monitored closely to prevent an addiction from developing, but the danger remains.

How to Detox From Opioids

Detox is a critical part of your overall recovery. It’s never advisable that you try to go through this process unless you are under the watchful eye of a trained medical professional since you may experience certain physical and psychological effects, including nausea and an increase in anxiety. In some cases, the symptoms may be more severe and potentially deadly.

What Opioid Rehab Is Like
