AA and NA Meetings in Orlando

What to Expect at AA and NA Meetings

An essential component of recovery is attending the 12-step meetings known as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA). During your time at Legacy Healing Center, our counselors will lead you and your peers in 12-step group meetings to help you work through different aspects of your addiction.

If you enroll in our outpatient program or when you complete our residential program, we strongly encourage you to stick with the habit of regularly attending AA and NA meetings. There are multiple meetings throughout the Orlando area. If you ever need help finding a meeting, our trained team of professionals are happy to help you. In fact, your personal sober coach, who will be a support for you for the rest of your life, is a great resource to help you get connected to meetings in your area. It’s vital that you find a regular meeting that you feel comfortable attending. Our team recommends that you take the time to attend a few different meetings around Orlando until you find one that feels right for you, this will become your “home” meeting. Keep in mind, you can also make it your routine to go to different meetings at various locations throughout the week.

There are also countless fun activities to do in Orlando that are sober friendly. Although Orlando is home to Disney World, Sea World, as well as numerous parks and golf courses, it can be challenging to find things to do that don’t trigger negative behaviors. Attending meetings helps you to build a support system of people that you can turn to when you are struggling with your sobriety. It also helps you make new friends that also live a sober life.

AA and NA Meetings in Orlando, FL

One of the incredible things about AA and NA meetings is that you can find a meeting practically any time of day, seven days a week. Many churches in the area allow their buildings to serve as a site for meetings. Here are a few:

Concord Street Church of Christ

Often, people in recovery find themselves looking for ways to develop spirituality. An added benefit of attending meetings in a church environment is that it can introduce you to a larger church community that you may wish to become a part of.

Narcotics Anonymous Meetings Orlando, FL

Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous are very similar, and attendees of one are typically welcome in the other. The meetings focus around incorporating the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions into your life which is why the meeting usually starts off by reading the 12 Steps. This is done as a reminder to meeting attendees of how out of control their life was during their active addiction and how they are powerless over addiction. It is only through continued self-development and regular meeting attendance that a person can achieve long term sobriety.

Regardless of how many meetings you attend or where you go for them, you will find that each meeting covers a specific topic. The meeting is usually opened by a coordinator who will share something about themselves and their experience in their recovery. The floor is then opened to others that want to share. It is asked that any type of sharing be limited to only a few minutes to give everyone the opportunity to speak.

There are also special meetings known as speaker meetings. During speaker meetings a person who has been in recovery for an extended time shares their story. In many cases, meeting attendees have the opportunity to ask the speaker questions about his or her experiences.

The wonderful thing about meetings is that you have the option to either just listen or to actively take part in each one. You will find there are many times that you attend a meeting and get more out of it just by listening to the stories of other people. Other times, you may share something during a meeting that makes a tremendous impact in someone else’s life.

Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting Orlando

It’s understandable that the first time you attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting you may feel uncomfortable. You may even be scared. The important thing to remember is that an AA meeting takes place in a judgment free environment. You never need to worry about what fellow meeting attendees are thinking because they are there for the exact same reasons you are. Each of you is coming to a meeting to help maintain your sobriety and learn new and different techniques to accomplish that goal.
