The opioid epidemic has been impacting families and communities in waves for decades, making it a leading cause for injury-related death in the United States. With nearly 70,000 Americans killed in 2018 from opioid-related overdoses, the importance of proper treatment programs is extremely vital.

Opioid addiction is a terrifying, severe experience that does not discriminate, causing families to suffer and become divided. In general, loved ones of opioid addicts will do what they can to keep their loved ones out of harm, and this often includes contacting a treatment center.

When families, or individuals, contact Legacy Healing Center in South Florida, we will work with you every step of the way to ensure the transition to treatment results in a smooth process. We know coming to grips with opioids can present challenges, but once this step passes, we can put clients on the right path. At Legacy Healing Center, we offer premier behavioral therapies with skilled staff that will work with our clients and their families every step of the way.

History of Opioid Addiction

Between 1999 and 2018, the opioid epidemic damaged families across the U.S. through abuse and death from illicit opioids. According to the CDC, the first significant wave of overdose deaths from opioids began in the early 1990s and continued until 1999. During this time, nearly 90% of the pain medications prescribed to non-cancerous patients were opioid medications.

In 2010, a second wave began putting a focus on heroin and the abuse of other illicit opioids. This rise in overdose tended to stem from the inability of individuals to renew their prescriptions to opioids.

A third wave began with a significant increase in overdose deaths directly related to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl in 2013. After the recent rise, the CDC decided to issue a set of guidelines that regulated the medical community and their prescribing of opioid pain killers.

Between 2017 and 2018, overdose deaths decreased by 4%, but it was still four times higher than in 1999. In 2018 alone, nearly 70% of drug-related deaths were caused by opioids.

At Legacy Healing Center, we understand the severity of opioid addiction. We are here to educate our clients and work tirelessly to ensure they can heal and overcome their addiction.

How to Detox From Opioids

Clients who enter our treatment programs will first be evaluated and then begin their medical detox. This process is always supervised by medical professionals and often accompanied by medications to ease the pain of withdrawal. At Legacy Healing Center, we do everything possible to make sure our clients are comfortable and safe.

After clients begin detox, they will start to feel withdrawal symptoms within 24 hours of the substance’s last use, which increases in intensity for 48 to 72 hours. After the 72-hour mark, these symptoms will generally subside but can still be felt for up to a week after entering detox. Some common withdrawal symptoms that can occur during detox include:

  • – Anxiety
  • – Restlessness
  • – Insomnia
  • – High blood pressure
  • – Rapid heartbeat
  • – Excessive sweating
  • – Blurred vision
  • – Tearing
  • – Dilated pupils
  • – Muscle & joint pain
  • – Nausea
  • – Vomiting
  • – Abdominal pain
  • – Diarrhea
  • – Dehydration

Not every detox experience is alike, and numerous factors play a role in the length and severity of withdrawal symptoms felt. These factors are:

  • – Age
  • – Length of addiction
  • – Type of addiction
  • – Severity of addiction
  • – Physical health
  • – Mental wellness
